Ukranian Art ~ A Ray of Hope This month Estate Auctions is featuring the innovatively fresh Ukranian artist, Anastasia Yesipova. The 31 year old artist lived in the Ukraine until a year ago when she relocated to Bulgaria due to the Russia/Ukraine conflict. She brings to the table imagery we find captivating. You see, art in the Ukraine is a lifeline of sorts. 2014 was a tumultuous year for The Ukraine. A revolution broke out in February of that year in the city of Kiev, which involved protesters, police, and shootings. This revolution resulted in the ousting of 2010 Elected President Viktor Yanukovych. A new interim government was put into place to restore the previous constitution. Ukraine has suffered many hardships since the breakup of the Soviet Union to include corruption, mismanagement, long years void of economic growth, a devaluation in their currency, and problems securing funds from public markets. President Yanukovych, in an attempt to help his country, was supposed to sign an agreement with the European Union that would have brought funds to the Ukraine to help their economy, but he backed out at the last minute, which caused an unavoidable revolt of the people. As a result of this, Russia refused to acknowledge Ukraine's interim government and decided they wanted to regain territory. They moved in as the country appeared weak without established leadership and took over the Crimean Penninsula. Since, there has been some form of war between those who want freedom for Ukraine and pro-Russian seperatists along with Russian special forces. Our artist shares with us:"I had my childhood during the collapse of the Soviet-Union and early 90s. It was one of the most difficult times for Ukraine. We were living in a poor neighborhood. Drawing was the only fun thing I did to pass the time. I was drawing everywhere. On paper, tables, cold concrete walls. I think this period of my life had the most influence on me." She, along with many other artists in the Ukraine, have found solace in their passion. When you look at her paintings you are not just seeing the mind of a creative individual. You are seeing the world through eyes that continue to behold beauty to spite pain. You are seeing a light that has shone bright in darkness...strokes of hope in the face of very discouraging circumstances. Anastasia reminds us through her art of the strength and resilience of the human spirit. Her art may thrill you with the attraction of abstracts and pops of living color but it does much more than that. It reminds us that when we give the gift within us we are made whole.
